History

In the world of fine resort dining, there's a lot more to longevity than a signature dish.

Kevin Clair opened Sweet Basil in June 1977 as a 47-seat restaurant in the heart of Vail Village, when Vail Village and a nascent Lionshead were about all there was to the Vail Valley. Over the last 4 decades we have learned, evolved, expanded and remodeled our way to a 130 seat restaurant; still in the same location in the heart of the Vail Village.

Our space has changed but our passion has never wavered; to provide each and every guest with the most memorable experience possible, rooted in the finest in contemporary American cuisine and service.

We have over 65 year round employees and own a very unique title. Over the last 33 years, at last count, more than two dozen former employees of Sweet Basil - from busboys and waiters to managers and chefs - have gone on to own or partner in their own establishments in Colorado and around the country! "Most of Vail Valley's top restaurants would never have existed without it" says Wine Spectator.
